Great Trango Tower Skied
On May 9th Americans Chantel Astorga, Jim Morrison and Canadian Christina Lusti skied the west face of one of the world's most iconic mountains. Trango Tower is 6,286 meters / 20,623 feet in height and located in Pakistan in the famous Trango massif next to Nameless Tower.“This line is wild like no other, edge of the world kinda shit,” said Lusti.
All three skiers are accomplished ski mountaineers in their own rights and waited for the optimal weather window for nearly a month before accomplishing their goal. In 2023, Morrison, Lustenberger, and Nick McNutt made the first-ever attempt to ski the hanging glacier from the summit but were turned away 500m shy of the summit. This year, Morrison and Lustenberger returned with Chantel Astorga and succeeded.
The Trango Towers, renowned for their vertical granite spires, are a magnet for elite climbers worldwide. The Great Trango Tower, the highest of the group at 6,286 meters, presents a more alpine-like terrain on its South and West sides, characterized by a complex system of ridges and gullies. This unique topography provided a narrow, continuous line for the daring descent.
“The inspiring lore of these fabled granite towers has long affected our dreams as mountain athletes. To be able to stand on top of the Great Trango Tower and ski amidst the most famous mountains in the Karakoram is a wild dream realized.”- Jim Morrison
