Lightning safety in the backcountry
You are out in the mountains and you see clouds building then a flash of light and the rumble of thunder—what do you do?Lightning can kill. Especially in the mountains.
You're up high, exposed and sometimes carrying conductors like an ice axe, hiking poles and avalanche gear—not a good situation.
You're most at risk on the water, near tall objects, or on summits and ridges and with the safety of your vehicle likely several kilometres away it's important to know what your options are and where the safest place to wait out the storm is.
