CHANGES TO AVALANCHE CANADA’S FORECASTING SYSTEM
I’ll hazard a guess, that unless we’re sitting in the sauna and happen to be browsing old Kootenay Mountain Culture magazines, most of us don’t really think much about skiing or snowboarding during the summer. If you’re Avalanche Canada though, the off-season makes for a great opportunity to re-think and re-work a highly trafficked platform on which you share so much of your information on.
This fall, Avalanche Canada is introducing some changes to their forecasting system. The most significant of those is the removal of fixed regional boundaries and regional names. Now, regional boundaries will be determined daily by forecasters, and will compensate for regional variability — thus allowing forecasts to more accurately reflect backcountry conditions. A new search feature on the home map will let you hone in to your riding areas more quickly, and regions will be fully coloured to reflect its highest danger rating.
AvCan has set up a pseudo forecast to demonstrate how the new system will operate. Check out the sneak peek here, until October 24th!
