Limited access in Jasper Backcountry to protect caribou population
Certain parts of the Jasper Backcountry will be off limits to skiers and snowboarders in an effort to protect the vulnerable caribou population. Parks Canada has implemented seasonal closures effective from November 1 to May 15 in the backcountry areas of the Tonquin, Brazeau, and A La Peche caribou ranges.Without backcountry recreationists packing down trails at high elevation Caribou habitat, wolves will have a harder time to prey on caribou in the areas they typically go to avoid predators. In the 1960s, Jasper was home to hundreds of caribou; today, there are fewer than 60 that remain. Read more about it in the Rocky Mountain Outlook.
