Rio Santo Domingo Full Descent - Steepest Rideable Waterfall Section in the World?
The Santo Domingo Gorge is said to be one of the steepest navigable river sections on the planet and that’s exactly why Dane Jackson decided to paddle it. Dane is a four-time Freestyle World Champion, five-time Green Race Champion and record-holder as well as a three-time Whitewater Grand Prix Champion and four-time North Fork Champion. The Santo Domingo Gorge near Chiapas, Mexico is an insane section of river with endless waterfalls. The gorge descends nearly 800 feet in just over 2 miles with the steepest 0.2-mile section dropping over 300 feet. The descent starts with an 80 foot drop off Angel Wing Falls, then the 85-foot Dome Waterfall, then 65-foot Toboggan Falls, and finally 35-foot Raw Dog Falls. While each waterfall is challenging in its own right, put them all together and there is no room for mistakes.
“Having seen this place in photos and video for over 14 years, it was a section always in the back of my mind—Coming up on 10 years since the last crew was able to make it happen, we knew it was finally time.”
