The Snow Dance
Every year we feel the crisp autumn air start to cool down the summer heat, we watch the leaves turn to amber, earthen, and gold and we feel with a renewed sense of hope that yes, winter is coming. The first snowfall brings a buzz about town, ushers in a buying spree of new gear, and preliminary trip plans begin to come together. Then, the first brave few venture out in the sharky waters of rock fins and dense alder - hoping to regain the childlike joy of their powder memories. Finally, winter hits with full force. It's cold embrace proving us with a deep velvet of white gold, champagne, coldsmoke, whatever you choose to call it - it's magical.
We relish in each powder day, and anticipate the stabilizing of the snowpack for those big mountain lines and bluebird conditions. Typically, the Kootenay's is in full force come February, the dense snowpack from the previous few months has provided ample coverage and we simply rejoice in each top up as mother nature provides it. This season however, their seems to be a February drought unlike something we've seen for a little bit. While it does provide ample time to explore new terrain, venture out, and having fun on your skiis in other ways - it is time my friends to do the snow dance.
Now, I'm not an expert in these things - but if we take Wikipedia for what it's worth it details: "A snow dance is a ritual that is performed with the hopes of bringing snow in the winter months. This ritual is often performed with the goal of avoiding school or work the next day. Specific Snow Dance rituals vary from person to person, but commonly include sleeping with silverware under one's pillow, flushing ice cubes in a toilet, or wearing your pajamas inside out and backwards.
So, in an effort to bring back our glorious powder days, please put entire cutlery drawers under your pillow, place shovel-fulls of snow & ice in your toilet, and of course put your head through the leg of your pajamas if that's what it takes... because we are desperate now, and we need all hands on deck!
So go forth and DANCE the snowdance of your dreams, whatever that might be, and with a bit of luck will all be floating down the mountainsides in no time.
