CAA - Ops Level 1 - Timed rescue scenario

Hi All,

This February I will be taking my ops level 1 and on the first day the instructors will be assessing our proffessional rescue skills with a timed scenario involving multiple burials.

Has anyone been through this course that can provide any feedback regarding the process or scenarios that they had experienced? I am confident in my rescue skills, but the timed part makes me nervous as there are unknown variables. ie. do we probe & then dig? or do we just have to get a probe strike and move on.

Anyways, maybe I'm overthinking this, but some feedback/advice would be much appreciated.

Need to find 2 transeivers in 5 min in a 50 sq m area (I think). Don't for get your hazard check.

Fairly straight forward.

Hello Matt,

If you have a new generation transceiver (multiple burial feature) and have practiced with it, you'll be fine. You'll have to lead a rescue, call on the radio, find, probe and shovel, and you'll have helpers. This is the easiest part of the course.

My advice would be to practice a bit of everything you'll see on the course, because that course is very fast paced. Practice your digging skills, snow profile, snow tests, avalanche observations.

I found that the teaching/learning part is the classroom stuff where you can ask lots of questions, and the field stuff is more an ongoing test as they seem to assume you've already done that stuff a hundred times.

I found more info in my course manual (how embarassing!) and it spells out the expectations clear as day. Page 97 incase anyone else is wondering.
