COMP - 7th day in a row of powder in the Chic-Chocs
For our 7th day in a row of skiing in the Chic-Chocs moutains in Gaspésie, Québec, we decided to try another spot called "Mont Lyall".
The Mont Lyall is located on the public "Crown Lands", a little bit more south of the "Réserve faunique des Chic-Chocs". As all the other moutains in the area, the site was developped by a group of passionnated volunteer skiers. They really worked hard on that site during the last 2-3 years and Mont Lyall now offers a wonderfull playground and can accomodate quite a lot of skiers at the same time. You are almost always sure to find some fresh powder snow there, even 7 days after a storm.
Here is a good picture taken by a friend earlier in the season showing the slopes of Mont Lyall http://www.facebook.com/photo&.....0392165697
We started the morning doing a little bit of kiteskiing on the nearby lake "Lac Sainte-Anne" in the "Réserve faunique des Chic-Chocs". The wind was quite gusty so we changed our plan and headed for the mountain.
The new climb path was a little bit too steep. They will fix it next fall. We decided to try the most recent development of the mountain. They didn't have the time to cut a nice trail to the start of the new hills, so we tried to find our way though the wood. Bad idea, it was a little bit too dense. We met a group of friends from Gaspé and Baie-des-Chaleurs in the field who told us that there is a small opening a little bit higher. Once you know where to enter, it's really easy. The small trail is about 10 meters long between the climbing trail and the skiing field. I guess they didn't want to publicize it too much for the "tourists". If you refer to the facebook picture I mentionned earlier, we skied the slopes completely to the right of the mountain.
The new slopes are really wonderfull. Lots of snow, first track (again), various terrain style. We enjoyed ourselves a lot and will go back quite often this winter. Here is a video of our day:
