GRIZZLIES OF THE KHUTZEYMATEEN INLET
Forty-five kilometres from Prince Rupert near the tip of the Alaska Panhandle, you will find Khutzeymateen Inlet, which is home to the highest concentration of grizzlies in all of British Columbia. The area was slated for logging in the early 80’s but conservationists soon discovered that the inlet contains the largest continuous stand of old growth Sitka spruce in the world, as well as a ton of grizzlies.
Today it is protected from logging, humans are denied access to shores, and a 300-kilometre hunting ban surrounds the area. Check out this recent article from Kootenay Mountain Culture Magazine to read more about the wilderness bear soap opera that is Khutzeymateen Inlet.
