Help Avalanche Canada Survey
Avalanche Canada is working on a new icon for spring avalanche conditions. When there is a good freeze overnight it can lead to some really stable snow however mid afternoon it can be the polar opposite. It is not an easy feat to cover such an extreme change in a easy to read daily avalanche bulletin. While most often the bulletin will read LOW (Alpine) LOW (Treeline) LOW (Below tree line) in the morning, the afternoon actually be might be Considerable(alpine) High (Treeline) High (Below Tree Line) deepening on the conditions of that particular day. The new symbol is to make recreational back country users aware make sense of these conditions.
These last few years Avalanche Canada has been leading the industry in public avalanche forecasting. The number of back country users is at an all time high while Avalanche incidents remain the same or are slightly better than previous years. I for one would like to credit some of that success to their efforts in education and development of daily interactive bulletins/bulletin apps. Take thirty seconds and fill out Parks Canada/Avalanche Canada's survey and give them a little feed back on the possible spring condition icons.
