In the French Alps
While the valleys of the Rhône-Alps province of France are still quite green, the mountains are starting to store up snow for the winter season to come. Finally! Fears that it might never snow here were starting to creep in…
For those who absolutely cannot wait to go skiing, no problem! Glacier skiing at Tignes has been open since October 12th and les 2 Alpes since the last weekend of October. Both mountains will gradually open the lower lifts as more snow accumulates, with estimated openings in December.
While the glacial snow is generally hard pack or icy, especially due to the high traffic at this time of year, the spectacular views afforded by a sunny day can still make it a worthwhile start to the season. If you’re a student, make sure to take advantage of the many ski programs and discounts available to you through the universities.
L’Alpe d’Huez, les 3 Vallées, les Arcs, and Megève, as well as many of the smaller, more local resorts will all open in December, signaling the official winter season in the Alps. So if you’re over on this side of the pond, or plan to be, it’s time to gather gear and get stoked because this winter is predicted to be a white one!
