Hello everybody!

I am new to skiing and I want to start skiing. I have a few questions to ask you guys.

1. Is it nesscary to take lessons or should I learn from YouTube videos and watching people ski?

2. I live in Calgary but I am willing to go outside of the city to ski. So where is the best place for a beginner to ski?

3. Should I buy my own gear or should I rent for the first season and see how it goes?

All answers are appreciated and any advice or comments are appreciated as well.

I presume you are interested in alpine skiing as opposed to cross country or backcountry? Youtube would be a good place to start (for general info on techniques, equipment, etc.), but lessons would be a great opportunity to learn from a trained professional (learn proper techniques first hand, progressions, etc.).

Are you interested in resort skiing or backcountry? There are many resorts and local hills, COP, Nakiska, Norquay (best for beginners). Many learn to ski packages available with rentals (and lunch) included. Don't consider the backcountry until you have a good handle on your abilities!

Take a lesson before you rent and rent before you buy and wait until you develop good skills and are actually interested in the activity.

Have fun and be safe (i.e., wear a helmet and ski within your ability)!
