      New to the backcountry

      Hi,

      I'm an avid skiier from Kelowna, BC that is interested in getting into the backcountry. I would like to learn more and also maybe connect with others in the BC interior, preferably as close to Kelowna as possibe. I have a couple friends that I ski with regularly but none that are interested in the backcountry. I am a complete novice but am giving some serious thought to getting some new gear and taking the avi courses this fall so I'm ready to explore next season. Anyone who has any advice or can point me in the direction of other Okanagan backcountry skiers would be greatly appreciated!

      I'll post since nobody local has answered in a few days. I had the same questions as you this past winter. I went up to a guy in AT gear at Big White who told me about Rick at Stay Tuned Sports. I checked out their website (http://www.staytunedsports.com) but there isn't anything about backcountry skiing so I went into the store. Lots of AT gear from some big name manufacturers like Scarpa, Dynafit, Garmont and G3. Rick's a good bootfitter too. He fixed a problem with my boots that two other Kelowna stores couldn't. I would recommend starting there. I live in Ontario but my parents live in Kelowna so I visit there often. I'll be there in the fall to buy my AT gear from Rick and back in January to take the AST 1 course and ski Roger's Pass and another trip in February. Best wishes.

      Hey Josh, wish we could help but we have no beta for the Okanagan area unfortunately. If you come upon any good sources or people in the know let us know as we would love to put up an Okanagan Routes section on the site but getting info is hard for that area.


      Great to hear you are getting some training before you head out, you may want to put a post in the "hook up" section on our forums next fall as some people may be keen then.

      @Admin: Good idea on the posting in the "hook up" section in the fall. I would be happy to share any Okanagan related information as I learn more.
