SOAP BOX - Weekday Warrior
There is definitely something enjoyable about heading out into the wilderness and having the place all to yourself (free of humans anyways). It allows you to full-fill your need for adventure and feel like you are doing something a little less ordinary than most people.
With the growing popularity of backcountry skiing, climbing and other adventure sports it seems like having the 'wilderness' all to yourself is becoming a little tougher to acquire. Especially if you work Monday to Friday and race off to the mountains the same days as everyone else and/or live close to the big city. Bigger missions become the norm and obscure areas are only discussed with your and your pals and are kept 'top secret' in fear of being overrun. But then there are all those pre-set skin tracks that lead to that sick run just when the deep trail breaking day is getting tiresome. Not to mention all those great people you meet out in the backcountry time and time again that are great and you cant seem to remember their name.
It would be nice if everyone could 'live the dream' and have monday-friday off and only work weekends and somehow make it work (becoming weekday warriors!) , but then everyone would be striving to become a weekend warrior and that would only leave 2 days to enjoy the 'wilderness' to yourself. I'm working on embracing the growing stoke around backcountry skiing and at the crags but for now I will enjoy a broken trail to that perfect run (even if I have to share the line) and try to make some new friends along the way. Happy winter everyone
