My Mountain Co-op continues to move forward with its efforts to purchase the Shames Mountain Ski Area as a community owned and operated facility.
Shames Mountain is an invaluable and irreplaceable asset to the region in terms of quality of life and the ability to attract and retain people in the area.
A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between MMC and the Shames Mountain Ski Corporation setting the stage for negotiations leading to a purchase agreement. The two parties are working together closely to ensure the legacy continues and a smooth transition occurs. The group intends to open and continue to operate Shames Mountain in 2011/12 and the future.
As of May 1, almost $300,000 has been raised, thanks to 585 individual members, 62 business members, and donations from organisations and businesses including Mt Remo and Prince Rupert Backcountry Societies, Progressive Ventures Ltd and Copperside Foods and other cash and in kind contributions.
All Co-op members registered by May 31, 2011 will receive a $100 coupon for use towards season’s pass purchase at any time.
The team continues to work on fundraising and are working hard to approach as many sources of funding as possible until they reach the goal of $2 million.
Currently, the Co-op is the only potential buyer of the hill and the group believes the success of Shames, in the long term, will be a joint effort of contributions from many individuals, business’ and corporations and potentially several levels of Government.
The Co-op is starting the process of a nomination drive for the first Board of Directors. To be nominated to the Board, the person seeking nomination must be a Co-op member before May 31, and have 5 other Co-op members support their nomination. MMC has formed a strong team of Founding Directors that includes Curtis Billey, Jamie Hahn, Jon Hopper and Shaun Stevenson.
