Has anyone been out in Kootenay Pass since Wednesday? How are the conditions? Did it escape the rain? Any info would be great.Hey Gang – my wife and I were exploring up in the Ripple Ridge area today and I thought I'd share some obs if you're interested:
Test Profile 1/5/12, 12:30pm
Location: Kootenay Pass, "Ripple Ridge", south side of highway
Terrain Profile: BTL, 1900m elevation near ridge top, NE aspect, open treed feature, 23 degree planar slope.
WX:
- Minus 5C, moderate westerly wind, overcast, light snow
- SM convective flurry mid afternoon deposited 5-10 cm HST BTL, mod winds with strong gusts
Snow Observations:
- HS 155cm
- Ski pen 10cm, boot pen 55cm
- 1cm pencil hardness melt/freeze (zipper) crust at surface (yay)
- CTM(18) x 2, down 22 cm SP on buried storm interface(?)
- CTM(14) x 2, down 59 cm SC on preserved surface hoar to size 10mm (12/14 layer?)
Ski Quality: Noisy to moderately horrible thanks to the surface zipper crust – pray for snow without wind!
