Avalanche Conditions Report #3
The latest Avalanche Conditions Report presented by Whitewater Ski Resort, Backcountry Skiing Canada and State of the Snowpack is now live so please give it a watch before you head out into the backcountry. The current hazard from Avalanche Canada is Low/Low/Low or 1/1/1 in our region. This is consistent with what we are seeing in the Whitewater backcountry. With recent moderate SE to SW winds watch for fresh wind or storm slab in exposed terrain at treeline elevations and above.
The current snowpack still sits at 100-120cm and consists of numerous crusts and surface hoar layers. These layers are not generally a concern at the moment due to lack of slab density or load on top of them. Once these layers get tested by a significant snowfall it will be prudent to exercise caution initially before we see if they will produce avalanches.
The weather remains uneventful for the next week. An inversion builds over the next couple days bringing slightly above freezing temperatures at ridgetop elevations. The next chance of significant snowfall is the 5th of January.
Now is a good time to sharpen the companion rescue skills and stay diligent with good travel habits and continue to monitor conditions.
