Self Rescue Beef!
Why does hardly anyone have a rescue sled?
I have my feet in the snow almost everyday for work or recreation. I see, many people now a days prepare themselves for emergency's such as avalanches, first aid, overnights, SPOT devices rescue plans and more. But not many people seem to plan for efficient extrication after the emergency. Is the plan to rely on Search and Rescue to be pluckt out of the back-country? Most equipment lists, including the on this site don't include rescue toboggans. Its not even extra weight to carry as some tarps have re-inforced loops to drag someone. This simple tool could be your or your partners quickest way to comfort. Many exit routes are easy to drag someone out, especially if you have group.
As a rescuer, i have again this year dealt with questioanble calls, where ski tourers thought they were prepared or just expected a rescue at a push of a button. Many things could go wrong during the rescue process and having a plan to move an imobolized person should be included in the equipment list.
Thanks Backcountry Skiing Canada, great website to support and motivate our great activity of Backcountry skiing. I see you have one rescue sled under your review and accessory page. I encourage skiers to have these tools with them in case your electronic devices don't work and our volunteer SAR group can not find you.
Let me know if you disagree with being self sufficient and have a safe season.
